Quieonn Blackman – Head Mens Basketball Coach, Montgomery College

Born and raised in the small town of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, as child nine of eleven, Coach Quieonn Blackman learned early the value of perseverance, teamwork, and humility. A 1989 graduate of Poplar Bluff High School, Quieonn carried those lessons with him when he moved to Maryland that same summer, where a lifelong journey of leadership, mentorship, and community impact began.

From the playgrounds of Maryland to college basketball sidelines across the region, Coach Blackman’s story is one of passion, resilience, and purpose. His love for the game quickly turned into a mission to help others. In 1991, he founded his own AAU organization, The Maryland Running Rebels, where he dedicated himself to developing young players both on and off the court. Despite facing two tough opening seasons, Coach Blackman’s leadership transformed the program into a powerhouse by 1993, producing college-bound athletes and future leaders.

That success caught the attention of Coach Steve Hobson (winningest coach in school history) of Montgomery College, who invited Quieonn to join his coaching staff in 1997. Though initially hesitant to take on an assistant role after leading his own program, Quieonn accepted and began his legendary college coaching career. Over the years, he helped lead Montgomery College to eight Regional Championships and seven National Tournament appearances, serving as Associate Head Coach until 2011.

Coach Blackman’s next chapter took him to Frederick Community College, where under Coaches David Miller and Emonte Hill, he once again helped guide his team to a Region XX Championship and a Division II national tournament appearance. He then continued his leadership journey as Associate Head Mens Basketball Coach at Howard Community College under Coach Joel Dearring.

Following the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Quieonn returned home back to Montgomery College, where his college coaching career first began. Working under Coaches Elliott Hedley and Jamaal Wise, he served once again as a volunteer assistant, giving selflessly of his time and wisdom to the next generation of athletes.

Now, as Head Mens Basketball Coach at Montgomery College, Coach Blackman stands as a testament to perseverance, purpose, and the power of mentorship. Over his 28-year college coaching career, he has helped countless players earn scholarships at the Division I, II, and III levels, guiding them not only toward success on the court but also toward achieving their college degrees.

For Coach Blackman, basketball is more than a game; it’s a vehicle for building men of character. He pours his heart into his players, serving as a mentor and father figure, teaching them how to become responsible husbands, fathers, and leaders in their communities. Known for his unwavering positivity, humility, and genuine care, he brings a smile and a sense of purpose into every gym he walks into.
