Raptors Stay Hot in Conference Play with Win Over Southern Maryland

Rockville, MD – The homestand continued for the women's soccer team as they hosted conference foe, College of Southern Maryland on Thursday, September 15. The Raptors entered the game at 3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference while the Hawks stood at 1-2 with their win coming against conference rival Anne Arundel.  The Hawks pressured Montgomery College from the kick-off and continued to find ways to generate shots throughout the first thirty minutes of the match. The Raptor backline and Lizzy Mayo held strong and kept CSM off the scoreboard while generating a few counterattacksagainst the run-of-play. The score remained 0-0 at the end of the first half in which the visiting, Hawks, outshot MC 7-5.

The start of the second half saw a rejuvenated Raptor squad take the field and immediately put the pressure on Southern Maryland. Maila Hudson was able to slip a through ball to Nieve Barry who placed a well driven shot from 22 yards out just passed the diving Hawks GK in the 50th minute to tally the first goal of the match. The goal led to an increased confidence from the Raptors as they continued to dominant possession and control of the match. In the 70th minute Emilia Webb scored her first collegiate goal in style. From more than thirty yards out, Webb's shot sailed over the goalkeeper and into the top corner. The goal put the Raptor's up 2-0 with twenty minutes remaining.

Montgomery College was able to slow down a few counters from the Hawks as Elijae Cobbs and Thai Williamson cleaned up and broke down any chances the College of Southern Maryland tried to create. The victory was the fourth in a row for Montgomery College and moves their record to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. The Raptors will finish off their long homestand on Tuesday, September 20th as they host CCBC Essex at 5:00 pm. Essex is currently ranked 20th in the NJCAA Division 2 Rankings.
