Raptors Track and Field at NJCAA Region 20 Outdoor Track & Field Championships

The second installment of the 2025 NJCAA Region XX Outdoor Track & Field Championships presented significant weather challenges for all the athletes at Howard Community College. Despite the rainy and cold conditions, the athletes emerged injury-free, which was the primary goal for this track meet. Coach Nelson expressed pride in the overall performance of the athletes.

Day 1: Kendall Wideman (FR) began the competition in the Men's Long Jump despite a downpour and cold temperatures. He finished in 3rd place in the event. Coach Nelson believes that on a better day, Kendall would have won without a doubt. Fortunately, Kendall will have another opportunity to redeem himself next week. In the afternoon, Promise Whitmore (FR) participated in the preliminaries for the 100-meter and 200- meter events. She was determined to improve her performance and qualify for the finals. Although Promise did not advance in the 100 meters, she successfully qualified for the finals in the 200 meters with a personal best time of 27.84 seconds. Chisenga Mwape (FR) was assigned the challenging lane 1 in the 200-meter preliminaries. On the Howard Community College track, lane 1 is not ideal for achieving fast times due to the tight turn leading into the straightaway.

Day 2: The Raptors started the day with Kendall Wideman, a freshman, competing in the High Jump. He excelled in the event, winning and earning the title of NJCAA Region XX Outdoor Track & Field champion. Kendall was close to clearing 6'3", which would have set a personal best for the season. Coach Nelson believes that next week, Kendall will achieve his breakthrough in this event. Promise Whitmore returned to compete in the 400 meters, where she finished in 3rd place overall in Region XX. This was her first race in the 400 meters of the season. While this event suits her abilities, she will need some encouragement to fully embrace it. In the finals of the 200 meters, Promise did not have the best start, which affected the results we were hoping for. Chisenga Mwape ran at his seasonal average in the men's 400 meters but believes he could have performed better, and he is aware of this. Next week, the Raptors will return to Division I competition, traveling to Morgan State University to compete in the Legacy Meet scheduled for Saturday, April 18-19. Come out to support the team!
