Men’s Soccer Kicks Off Season with Road Win

Cumberland, MD – After working through almost a month of two-a-day preseason sessions, the two-hour drive to Cumberland was all that stood between the Raptors and their first competitive game of 2022. After stepping off the bus, the Raptors took care of business, securing a 3-0 victory over the Allegany College Trojans.

It was a tight matchup through most of the first half, with Allegany happy to stay compact and repel attacks from the Raptors. Montgomery College had most of the ball and opportunities, but struggled in the final third, failing to take advantage of numerous chances. In the final minute of the half, the Raptors finally came good, with a cross from striker Abdoul Anounkou finding an open David Rojas for a tap in at the far post. Shortly after, the half time whistle saw the Raptors enter half time with a 1-0 lead.

Tactical changes at the half allowed the Raptors to take advantage of space provided on the right side of the field. Two minutes into the second half, midfielder Hurrich Engoue found space on the wing and delivered a quality cross to Anounkou. The striker side-footed a first-time volley, putting the shot back towards the near post for a 2-0 lead. Five minutes later, sophomore Luis Aquino struck from the edge of the penalty area, again finding the near post with a low driven shot to put the Raptors up 3-0.

The 3-0 win sees the Raptors open the season 1-0. Next up for the Raptors is the Tom Bichey Memorial Tournament, which will be hosted at Montgomery College. The #18 nationally ranked Raptors will face #8 Monroe College (NY) and Harcum College (PA.) The tournament will take place on Friday, Sept. 2 and Sunday, Sept. 4 at MC's Soccer Stadium on the Rockville Campus.
