Cardinals Fall in Marathon Quarterfinal
CCBC Catonsville's baseball team fell in their quarterfinal match with Montgomery College on Saturday, losing 4-3 in 13 innings.
After waiting an extra day due to rain, the Cardinals kicked off the Region 20 tournament by snagging a 3-1 lead. Trailing 1-0 after the first, the Cardinals got on the board in the fourth. Freshman designated hitter Nelson Grajales (Arundel) hit an RBI single to tie the game. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, freshman third baseman Joey Hurtado (The Villages Charter) smacked an RBI double that scored two runs.
Catonsville's lead would hold until the bottom of the sixth when Montgomery tied the game on a passed ball. With sophomore starting pitcher Cecil Barone (Hereford) having gone nearly the entire game, the Cardinals sent in sophomore pitcher Andrew Bubon (Lake Brantley) to close out the game. Bubon would duel with Montgomery's pitchers for the next six innings, allowing just four hits and no runs.
The pitcher's duel would end in the bottom of the 13th inning, as Montgomery hit a walk-off single to clinch the victory. Despite the loss, the Cardinals will get a second chance with the losers bracket game on Sunday.
