Cougars Fall 8-5 to Finish Region 20 DII Runner-up
Despite an improved hitting performance, the Frederick Community College Cougars fell to the Montgomery College Raptors 8-5 in the Championship game of the NJCAA Region 20 DII. The Cougars out-hit the Raptors 11 to 8, with Brody Lindsey leading the charge with three hits.
Montgomery opened the scoring in the second inning with a single that brought in a run.
A key moment came in the bottom of the fifth when Christian Cabina's single helped the Cougars level the score at one.
The Cougars took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to a single by Dillon Jennings and a sacrifice fly by Nick Keane, each driving in a run.
However, the Raptors surged ahead in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs on a single, a double, and another single, making it 5-3.
Truitt Brinsfield started on the mound for Frederick, pitching four innings, giving up two hits and one run, striking out eight, and walking eight.
Despite the loss, the Cougars' offensive effort was commendable. Keane and Jennings each drove in two runs, while Bryce Curry and Nick Varda contributed multiple hits. The team also showed strong defensive skills, turning two double plays and committing no errors, with Jennings making 16 plays.
Finishing as the NJCAA Region 20 DII Runner-up, with an overall record of 49-8, the Cougars now await the possibility of being selected for an at-large bid to the NJCAA DII Baseball World Series in Enid, OK, from May 25 to June 1.
