
HICKORY, N.C. — Behind a pair of 20-point performances from freshmen Danasja Horne and Jada Whitesides, the Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team held off a late charge from Montgomery College (Md.) to earn a 66-62 victory on Friday night at the Tarlton Complex.
Horne led the Red Hawks (2-3) with a career-high 24 points, seven rebounds and eight steals, while Whitesides added 21 points, six rebounds and five steals.
The two 20-point scorers are the first in a game for the Red Hawks since March 3, 2023.
Catawba Valley took a 33-26 halftime lead behind 17 points from Horne and 10 from Whitesides.
The Raptors (4-2) rallied in the second half, utilizing full-court pressure to tie the game at 39-39 on a Kennedy Clifton lay up with 6:13 left in the third quarter.
Montgomery would eventually take its first lead of the game — 50-48 — with 8:35 left in the game on a pair of free throws from Litzy Lujan-Gonzales.
Despite trailing 60-59 with 1:38 left in the contest, the Red Hawks remained resilient. A pair of free throws by Red Hawk sophomore Erianna Scott put CVCC back in front for good.
Moments later, a key steal and lay up from Horne and free throws from Whitesides helped extend the Red Hawk advantage en route to the four-point non-conference win.
The Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team has a long break before its next game. The Red Hawks travel to Raleigh on Thursday, Dec. 5 to take on Wake Tech in Region 10 competition. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
