Volleyball's Statesmen Rematch & Tournament Prep

South Prince George, VA (October 21, 2023) - Cape Fear Volleyball finished their final regular season matchups this past Saturday afternoon as they faced off with non-conference opponent Mongomery College (MD) and conference rival Richard Bland. The Sea Devils hold the #1 spot in the conference over #2 Richard Bland, but unfortunately fell to the Statesmen in their thrilling Saturday rematch that went all the way through 5 sets.

Outside of a tough 12-25 second set of high error and lack of cohesion and communication, Cape Fear kept the Statesmen honest throughout the match - trailing the first and third sets only by 2 or 3 points respectively. The Sea Devils found their momentum in sets three and four where Cape Fear managed to finish the fourth 25-15 over the Statesmen to force them to a competitive fifth set. Leah Davis and Jodee Barnes both played their roles well in keeping the Sea Devils in every play defensively, while their deceptive serves pushed the Statesmen to their limits.

When it came down to the fifth and final set, Richard Bland managed to put enough points away quickly and efficiently to earn their win against the Sea Devils. This puts Cape Fear and Richard Bland at a 1-1 record for the season as they hope to meet again in the Region 10 Tournament Championships to battle for the top of the conference and a ticket to the NJCAA National Tournament.

London Ipsen earned 13 kills and 17 digs, while Mackenzie earned 12 kills alongside her own 17 digs. Abby Morse earned 6 blocks while Quincy Vanderhorst led the Sea Devils offensively with 31 assists.

Cape Fear then played out their match against Montgomery College immediately after the battle against Richard Bland - where Cape Fear went for another 5 sets. Montgomery College took advantage of their fresh legs as they attempted to push the tempo against the Sea Devils' post-match fatigue, but Cape Fear persevered and regained control in the fourth set with a 25-15 win. The Sea Devils finished set 5 15-6 to end regular season play with one final win.

Mackenzie Davis earned 19 kills with 17 digs, while London Ipsen found her second wind with 11 kills, 12 digs, and 6 aces. Abby Morse registered 7 blocks and 8 kills, followed by Jodee Barnes' individual season-high of 14 digs.

"It was tough playing back-to-back 5-set matches, but I'm proud of everyone who stepped into different roles to help us power through," says Head Coach Colby Rosser.
