Rockville, MD – Attending Garrett College women's volleyball matches is turning into a long-term commitment.
The Lady Lakers were involved in two more five-set dramas last week – their second and third consecutive matches to go the distance. GC defeated Westmoreland County Community College, 23-25, 25-22, 25-14, 21-25, and 15-7, last Tuesday. Cecil College then edged the Lady Lakers, 25-20 20-25, 17-25, 25-23, and 15-5, last Saturday as a part of a tri-match at Montgomery College.
"Westmoreland was a tough mental match due to their ability to always keep the ball up," said GC head coach Brittany Jackson. "They sent a lot of free balls over that we either scored on, or we played it safe and just sent it over. We need to learn to play more tactical than safe."
After four evenly played sets, GC dominated the fifth set against Westmoreland. The Lady Lakers went on a 10-0 run, the last nine points on Eugenia Rosa's serve, to take an 11-1 lead.
GC finished off the win with a middle kill by Aiyana Yoder (five kills) off a Karen Cuellar set.
Jackson said the Cecil match came down to "who made the least errors per set."
"We were either off in our serve-receive or our serving as the match went along," added Jackson, whose squad dropped to 2-4 overall and 1-4 in league play with Saturday's sweep. "In our conference, inconsistent play like that will lose the match."
Brenna L'Hommedieu (21 kills with just two hitting errors) and Chi Lalk (14 kills, 13 digs) were the top hitters against Westmoreland, while Cuellar (45 assists, seven aces) ran the offense efficiently. Paulo Chirino had a match-high 20 digs to go along with four aces, while Kydnze Salinas chipped in with nine digs.
Emily Schuck (six kills) and Skyler Durst (14 assists) led the way for Westmoreland.
Cuellar (34 assists, four aces), L'Hommedieu (16 kills), Emma McCord (11 kills), and Chirino (22 digs) all had solid matches against Cecil. Rachel Mullins' 36 assists and double-digit hitting efforts by Etta Harris (17 kills) and Ryleigh Racine (10 kills) helped Cecil pull out the win.
L'Hommedieu had eight of GC's 20 team kills against Montgomery. Cuellar had 15 assists while Chirino came up with 10 digs.
"Paola played a good game against Montgomery's strong hitters," said Jackson. "She had some key digs along with a strong serve-receive."
Logan Burge led Montgomery with 12 kills while Janelle Orellana added 11 assists and two aces to lead the Raptors.
The Lady Lakers play at Community College of Beaver County on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and host a tri-match Saturday against Carroll Community College (10 a.m.) and Chesapeake College (2 p.m.). Carroll and Chesapeake play the middle match at noon.
