Women’s Soccer Suffers Loss to Raptors

SOUTH PRINCE GEORGE, VA – The Richard Bland College women's soccer team traveled to Region 20 opponent, Montgomery College (MD) Saturday afternoon for a non-conference game. At the conclusion of the match, the Statesmen moved to 3-5-1 overall, 1-2-1 in conference play.
Richard Bland and Montgomery battled through 19 scoreless minutes Saturday evening. In the 20th minute, the Raptors earned a throw in and their attackers found a gap in the Statesmen defense, allowing them to score, taking the 0-1 lead. In the 32nd minute, Oakley Lamprecht beat a Raptor defender and was able to get shot off above the keeper's hands, but the goal was called back due to being offsides. The score remained 0-1 in favor of the Raptors at the break.
With 10 minutes left in the game, the Raptors served a ball in to the top of the 18 yard box, which deflected off of the Richard Bland defender, setting up a shot for Montgomery College. Montgomery floated the ball over the Statesmen keeper to increase the lead to two. Although Richard Bland was down 0-2 with 3:57 left in the game, Shani Priestly continued to show perseverance and intensity carrying the ball down field and taking on the Raptor keeper 1v1 on a breakaway, but was unable to get a shot off. The Raptors held on for a 0-2 win at the final whistle.
Emily Orn played all 90 minutes in the frame and was credited with six saves. Kimberlee Cobb, Priestly, Silvia Bower-Heeg, and Grace Pope all had one shot on goal for the Statesmen.
The Richard Bland College women's soccer team next travels to Wake Technical Community College on Monday, October 7th for their second meeting of the season. Kickoff is set for 1:30pm on the stadium field at WRAL Soccer Park.
