Catamounts Fall Short in Home Opener

Catamounts Fall Short in Home Opener

Potomac State Women's Soccer opened their 2023 season at home Thursday evening against Montgomery Community College.

The Raptors started strong, pressuring the Catamounts back line, until a 22nd minute when Morgan Pyles took a deflection from the Montgomery back line and netted her first goal of the season. The Raptors did not let that stop them and continued the press and put shots up at Potomac State's keeper. Despite being outshot 8-2 in the first half, the Catamounts would take a 1-0 lead into the break.

The second half was much of the same, and the Raptors were able to find their break-through in the 59th minute off a corner kick, knotting the match at 1-1. Just a few minutes later, Montgomery would take a 2-1 lead and that's how the game would stay until the 88th minute when the Raptors took a deep shot and found the back of the net over the Catamounts keeper. Just 20 seconds later though, Potomac State's Pyles found the back of the net again to make the game 3-2 with just over a minute remaining. The Catamounts pressured the Raptors for the final minute, but was unable to find the tieing goal.

Hartley VanGilder played all 90 minutes in net, making 6 saves.

The Catamounts return to action Tuesday, the 29th when they travel to CCBC Essex for a region 20 matchup. The game is slated for a 5:00 start.
