Cecil Starts Fast, Holds On to Defeat Raptors
NORTH EAST - Cecil College softball took down the Montgomery Raptors via the same 5-4 scoreline in Friday's second game.
The Seahawks took advantage of Montgomery errors to take the game over in the middle innings. Tied 1-1 after two, Montgomery would make three fielding errors and walk a batter to start the frame. This allowed Cecil to score twice and force the Raptors to make a pitching change. The switch proved ineffective, as Briana Rebman and Tristan Canavan recorded back-to-back RBI for a 5-1 lead before the side was retired.
Amaia Smith battled through the final four innings to keep Montgomery trailing. The Raptors pulled within two in the fifth after a two-out double scored a pair. Smith stopped a change for more damage in the sixth, forcing a groundout and a popout to end the inning.
Three outs away from defeat, Montgomery doubled to start the frame. Cecil's defense responded with back-to-back putouts, but a base knock brought in the leadoff hitter to make it 5-4. Another single, followed by a wild pitch, posted runners on second and third with two outs. However, Smith would get the next batter to fly out to right to give Cecil a sweep on the day.
The Seahawks are now 17-11 (8-8 Region 20) after the win.
