Prince George’s Outlasts Montgomery, Advances to Region 20 Championship vs. CCBC Essex
For the fifth time in as many seasons, the Prince George's Community College women's basketball team will once again be playing for a Region 20 Championship after defeating Montgomery College in a semifinal matchup at Howard Community College on Friday afternoon, 60-57. After four-straight seasons being crowned Region 20 Division III Champions, the Owls are now looking to upset #1 tournament seed and #3 nationally ranked CCBC Essex as Champions after Prince George's elevated to Division II over this past summer.
Friday's semifinal matchup against #6 seeded Montgomery College came down to the wire as Prince George's held a slim lead and struggled to connect on their free throws down the stretch which gave the Raptors one final possession to tie the score in regulation. Luckily for the Owls, Montgomery had to rush their potential game tying three-pointer which resulted in an airball for the Raptors as time expired, sealing the win for Prince George's.
The Owls were far from their best in the win as they shot 34% from the floor and just 50% (10-for-20) from the charity stripe which allowed Montgomery to crawl back into the game late. Despite their shooting struggles, the Owls were able to lean on their bench which contributed 34 of the team's 60 total points. Led by Tamia Washington (20 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals) and Nia Grymes (11 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals), the Owls managed to hold off the Raptors without two-year starter Kalise Evans who fouled out and newcomer Nyla Buyck suddenly unavailable due to injury in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday versus Chesapeake.
Head Coach Devin May must now turn his attention to CCBC Essex for a third matchup between the two programs this season, this time around with a Region 20 Championship on the line. Saturday's Championship game tips off at 12 PM at Howard Community College and will also determine the Mid-Atlantic District Champion who will advance to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament held in Joplin, Missouri beginning March 17th.
Tickets to Saturday's game are $10 and Howard accepts cash or card. The game will also be livestreamed on Howard Community College's official athletics Vimeo page, which can be found here: https://vimeo.com/showcase/howardccathletics.
