
Sophomore Recognition Night Capped Off By Dominant Win
Rockville, MD: In a dominant performance on Sophomore Night, the Montgomery College Raptors women's basketball team overpowered the Baltimore City Panthers in the first quarter, establishing a commanding lead early on. The Raptors capitalized on turnovers and missed shots by the Panthers, with strong contributions from Daniella McGuthrie, Litzy Lujan-Gonzales, and Tiana Carey. Despite a few brief moments of success from Baltimore City, including a layup by London Galbraith, Montgomery College's relentless defense and efficient offense kept them firmly in control, ending the quarter with a commanding 19-11 lead.
In the second quarter, Montgomery College made several substitutions. The action started with a turnover by Montgomery College, which led to a steal by London Galbraith for Baltimore City Community College. After a missed jump shot from Galbraith, Carey grabbed the defensive rebound, and Massenburg made a jump shot assisted by Lujan-Gonzales. A turnover by Galbraith followed, and Massenburg capitalized on a steal, but Carey missed a layup. The ball was again recovered by Massenburg, but her second layup attempt was missed. Williams, Yaheera grabbed the offensive rebound, and Massenburg eventually converted a layup off an assist from Carey. Baltimore City then turned the ball over once more, which allowed Carey to steal it back and pass it to Massenburg for another layup. Later, Lujan-Gonzales made a 3-point jump shot, and more turnovers by Baltimore City continued to lead to fast breaks for Montgomery College, as Massenburg and Egelebo grabbed rebounds and set up additional points. A crucial moment came when Carey made a 3-pointer with an assist from Lujan-Gonzales, followed by a missed 3-pointer from Trejo of Baltimore City. Substitutions continued for both teams, but Lujan-Gonzales and Massenburg were instrumental in setting up scoring opportunities. By the end of the quarter, Clifton, Kennedy, and Massenburg extended Montgomery College's lead further with key baskets and free throws, ending with a 3-point shot from Massenburg, assisted by Italia Jackman to end the first half.
In the third quarter, Montgomery College continued to dominate. Early in the quarter, Clifton, Kennedy grabbed a defensive rebound. Baltimore City responded with a 3-pointer from Samya Gary. Despite several turnovers and missed shots from both teams, Montgomery College extended their lead with Carey making a layup, and Lujan-Gonzales contributing assists. Kennedy Clifton and Yaheera Williams added baskets, with Williams finishing a layup. Lujan-Gonzales hit a crucial 3-pointer, and Massenburg nailed one too, further pushing the score. Clifton and Williams added more points as Montgomery College continued to control the game, eventually reaching a 79-28 lead by the end of the quarter.
The Montgomery College Raptors put on an incredible performance against Baltimore City Community College, with congratulations to the sophomore contributions from Litzy Lujan-Gonzales, Daniella McGuthrie, Kennedy Clifton, Jane Egelebo, and Janet Egelebo. Daniella McGuthrie, who finished with 34 points, 3 assists, and 5 steals, made a massive impact on the game. She went out in a BANG with strong finishes and key shots, including a layup and a jump shot, as well as a free throw to add to the Raptors' dominant scoreline, with the final score 96-39. The Raptors are soon headed into the post-season.
