Raptors Slay The Dragons

On Saturday, December 14th, the Montgomery College Raptors hosted the Howard Community College in a Region 20 matchup. The Raptors won 65-53, improving their record to 8-3 on the season.

The Raptors once again came into this game shorthanded, with multiple players either out with injury or under the weather. They found themselves down 14-12 to end the first quarter, turning the ball over 6 times. The second quarter was a different story, with the Raptors outscoring the Dragons 21-9. The Raptors repeatedly burned the Dragons with high-low actions against their 2-3 zone. Kennedy Clifton scored 16 points this quarter on wide open layups, with Litzy Lujan-Gonzales and Yaheera Williams combining for 7 assists.

While the Dragons were able to adjust after halftime, different Raptors found their groove. Daniella McGuthrie scored 5 points and grabbed 2 rebounds in the third quarter and did a great job directing her teammates on defense. Yaheera Williams grabbed 4 offensive rebounds in the third, keeping important possessions alive. In the fourth quarter, Litzy Lujan-Gonzales came alive and sealed the game. She scored 10 of her 19 points in the fourth, including a miraculous and-one three pointer to push the lead to 20. This win moves the Raptors to 2-1 in Region 20 play.
