Raptors unable to tame the Storm

On January 2nd, the 17th ranked Montgomery College Raptors (11-1) headed down to Thomasville, NC to take on the third ranked Davidson-Davie Community College Storm (12-1) in the Davidson-Davie New Year's Classic. The Raptors came up short, falling 95-92.

From the tip, the Storm took it to the Raptors. The Raptors found themselves down 12-2, and were down 10 or more points four different times during the half due to defensive miscommunications. However, the Raptors never wavered, and after a run capped off by a Franklin Ayissi-Etoh three pointer were able to seize momentum. Christopher Levy kept the Raptors in the game, scoring 22 of his 29 points in the first half, including back to back and-one layups. The Raptors went into halftime up 54-50, ca pping a high scoring half.

Coming out of the half, the Raptors extended the lead to 10 off of three straight fastbreak layups. The Storm responded with an 8-0 run, and the game stayed deadlocked from there. Down the stretch, Dane Stewart kept getting to his spots, scoring a flurry of points off of elbow jumpers. The Raptors went cold down the stretch, and were down 3 with under a minute remaining. After barely missing a steal, the Storm came up clutch from the free throw line, and a full court heave from Ian Pascal fell just short. This loss moves the Raptors to 11-2 on the season

Stats to note:
  • Christopher Levy led all scorers with 29 points, his career high.
  • Ibrahim Abdulmateen had an all around game, finishing with 15 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals.
