Lady Owls Halftime Lead Slips Away In Loss To Montgomery

Prince George's women's basketball traveled to Montgomery College on Saturday afternoon, February 1st to take on the Raptors in a Maryland JUCO battle. After leading at halftime, the Owls fell behind in the final period and saw their lead disappear as they ultimately fell to the Raptors, 78-62. The loss drops the Owls to 10-10 on the year including 3-6 in MD JUCO play. Montgomery improves to 11-3, 4-1 MD JUCO.

After trailing in the first period, the Owls rebounded in the second after putting together a 10-2 run to start off the quarter and give the Owls a 23-21 lead. Prince George's would later go on another 10-2 run to close out the period and head into halftime with a 38-33 lead. The Owls nearly doubled their point total from the first ten minutes (13) as they poured in 25 in the second period alone. Freshman DaJine'e Gatling dominated in the first half as she scored 21 points and added 7 rebounds to help carry the Owls to their five point lead at the break.

Prince George's came out slow to begin the third period which caused the Owls to again fall behind before tying it up at 46 with a minute and a half left in the period after Tatiana Garvin connected on two free throws. Moments later Gatling would give the Owls their final lead of the game, 50-48, as she drove in a layup from a Garvin pass before Montgomery tied the score at 50 just before the third period came to a close.

Prince George's efforts to regain the lead fell short in the final period as the Owls struggled to keep up with the Raptors attack. Entering the contest with only one healthy bench player, the Owls were outscored 28-12 over the final ten minutes as Prince George's came up short, 78-62. Gatling finished as the games top scorer as she finished with 23 points to go along with 8 rebounds. Garvin (19 pts) and fellow freshman Kori People (12 pts) both also finished in double figures in the loss.
