Hawks Top Raptors for First Time in Nearly Six Years

The College of Southern Maryland Hawks women's volleyball team took down the Montgomery College Raptors 3-2 on Tuesday, Aug. 29, in La Plata, Maryland.

CSM started the match strong, dominating the first set 25-11. Montgomery let the Hawks know they planned on hanging around the whole night, answering with a 25-21 second set win. CSM took the third set handily 25-14. Montgomery snatched the fourth set 27-25 to send the match to the tie-breaking set.

After Montgomery had a 3-2 lead in the fifth, CSM went on a six-point run to take a 8-3 lead. After the teams changed sides, the Raptors responded with a five-point run to tie the score at 8-8. The remainder of the set stayed neck and neck until CSM grabbed the last two points to win the match.

The last time the CSM volleyball program beat Montgomery was Oct. 17, 2017, when the Hawks beat the Raptors 3-0; the Hawks had two other victories over Montgomery earlier that season as well. CSM had gone 0-6 and was swept four times against Montgomery since then.

Ellyssa Fultz led the Hawks in kills on Tuesday with 17. Maria Peña was second with 13 while providing the most assists for CSM with 34.

Ema Heinhorst provided three service aces. Katrina Swanson made 20 digs, Heinhorst had 18, and Fultz had 12. Mackenzie Lund had two solo blocks and one block assist.

The Hawks' record is now 3-0 overall.
