Owls Comeback Upended In Final Seconds As Prince George’s Falls To Montgomery

A dramatic finish inside Novak Field House on February 7th between the Prince George's Community College Men's Basketball team and the visiting Montgomery Raptors which came down to the closing seconds saw the Owls come up just short for the second game in a row as the Owls dropped their third straight game, 63-61. The Owls have lost their past two games by a combined three points and now currently sit at 10-10 on the year.

A slow start in the Owls put Prince George's behind by as much as 14 points before they were able to cut the Raptors lead to just 8 at halftime, 30-22. Six different Owls had scored at the break. Anthony Perry led the way with 6 points, adding 4 rebounds.

The Raptors would reclaim another 14 point advantage minutes into the second half and hold the lead for the next ten minutes until Deonta Dunlap hit a pair of free throws to take a 53-52 Owls advantage with just over five minutes remaining. A back-and-forth battle the rest of the way saw both programs trade baskets with the Raptors regaining as much as a 3-point lead over the closing minutes. A pair of Montgomery free throws with 41 seconds left gave the Raptors a slim 60-59 lead but the Owls were able to collect two offensive rebounds on their next possession,  ending with an Alonzo Wilkes put back to put the Owls in control, 62-61.

The Raptors responded with a layup and later regained possession which sent them to the free throw line with 2 seconds remaining. Montgomery's Marlon Pratt hit 1-of-2 to give the Owls another chance at a comeback. The Raptors fouled Wilkes on the inbound pass, sending him to the line with a chance to tie with 1 second left. Wilkes missed his first attempt but was then able to strategically play the ball off the rim on his second, allowing his team to collect the ball and earn one last chance to send the game into overtime with 0.4 seconds left. The Owls successfully got a shot off from Keynante Williams but it came up short as the buzzer sounded.

Eight different Owls scored during the game as Wilkes paved the way with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Saveon Jackson followed with 11 points and 3 rebounds while also being active on the defensive side of the ball, picking up 7 steals.  Reed Rebstock (9) and Deonta Dunlap (8) rounded out the Owls top scorers.

Prince George's will look to bounce back on Wednesday, February 9th when they host Hagerstown Community College in Novak Field House at. 7 PM.
